Laurent Stalder
Curriculum Vitae
Laurent Stalder (b.1970, Lausanne) studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, qualifying in 1996. From 1996 to 1997 he undertook a scholarship with the Swiss Institute for Archaeology and Architectural Research in Cairo, and from 1997 to 2001 served as an assistant at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) of the Department of Architecture of the ETH Zurich, where he obtained his doctorate in 2002. In the same year he became an assistant professor for architectural history in the History Department of the Université Laval in Québec, Canada. In 2006 he took up a post as assistant professor for architectural theory at the gta Institute. Since 2018 he is full professor at the gta and its head until June 2021. In 2009 he was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in fall semester 2019 he was guest professor for «Architectural Behaviorology» at the Departement of Architecture and Building Engineering, School of Environment and Society at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
The main focus of Laurent Stalder’s research and publications is the history and theory of architecture from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries where it intersects with the history of technology. His main publications include Hermann Muthesius 1861–1927.: Das Landhaus als kulturgeschichtlicher Entwurf (2008), Schwellenatlas (2009), Atelier Bow Wow: A Primer (2013), Fritz Haller: Architekt und Forscher (2015), Architecture/Machine (2017), Architectural Ethnography (2018), Founding Myths (2019), Architektur Ethnographie (2020). His articles have been published in various journals, including AA Files, ARCH+, Grey Room, The Journal of Architecture, werk, bauen + wohnen and the Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte.
Laurent Stalder is a member of the board of the Swiss Institute for Archeological and Architectural Research in Cairo, Egypt.
In 2015 he was awarded the Golden Owl for his teaching at the Departement of Architecture, ETH Zurich.
