Public Triage: Architecture Competitions for the City of Zurich, 1950–1980

Organizer: A Collaboration between gta Archives and gta Exhibitions
Date: Monday, 9 January 2023 to Wednesday, 8 February 2023
Location: ETH Zürich, Archena, HIL D 57.1

In January and early February 2023, gta Archive publicly processes its latest acquisition: a large batch of architecture competitions, organized by the City of Zurich between 1950 and 1985. These materials include high-profile competitions for the Schauspielhaus Pfauen (1964) and Zürich Hauptbahnhof, alongside numerous other public buildings, schools, and housing schemes. They will bring new insights into the realized or unrealized work of important postwar architects including Justus Dahinden, Rudolf and Esther Guyer, Ernst Gisel, Manuel Pauli, Pierre Zoelly, Elsa Burckhardt-Blum and many others.

The Public Triage comprises the transparent selection, inventorying, and archiving of this large volume of folios. Students and public will be able to peruse the triage area, learn about archival appraisal, and discover previously lost records of Zurich’s modern architecture history. An exhibition of models and documents already in the gta Archives, curated by Daniel Weiss, will complement the City of Zurich competition plans. The exhibition will close with the roundtable «The Architecture Competition as Shared Heritage», with contributions from leading conservation specialists, historians, and professional stakeholders. The materials uncovered during the Public Triage will form the basis for the discussion of the architecture competition’s role, both historical and current, in the formation of Swiss Baukultur.
