The gta Archives as a Linchpin of Teaching and Research

Guided evening tour
Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg
14 November 2017, 6:15 p.m.
Concept and organisation: gta Archives, ETH Zurich

The annual evening tour given by the gta Archives of ETH Zurich takes the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) as an opportunity to illuminate its history from the perspective of the archive.
Since the absorption of the so-called Semper Archive from ETH Bibliothek shortly after the founding of the gta Institute, the gta Archives has collected and archived original documents covering architecture, urban development, civil engineering, landscape architecture and design, ranging from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. As an elementary part of the gta Institute, the archive has, since the beginning, provided a significant basis not only for teaching at the Department of Architecture but also for research both within the institute and externally.
The gta Archives houses numerous materials directly pertaining to the history of the institute. Various holdings and collections document the teaching activities and research focal points, or provide insights into the exhibition projects, publication plans and the workings of the institute, thereby equally reflecting both the positions and the visions involved. This diachronic perspective allows the multifaceted relationships to become evident, providing a broad window into the institute’s history. The evening tour is conceived as a complimentary part of the anniversary exhibition in which chronology, discourses and individual protagonists are highlighted.
